Weekly Update for March 29, 2018

Weekly Update

Tomorrow: Good Friday

Last Sunday we heard the Passion story, the story of Holy Week and Jesus’ journey to the cross. It’s incredibly moving– I encourage everyone to read it again in Matthew 26-27 (or in the other gospels.) This Friday at 6:30 we’ll commemorate Jesus’ death itself. It seems odd to call it “Good” Friday when what happened is so bad. I suppose it’s the benefit of looking back, knowing how the story ends– the truth is that Jesus’ death was indeed “Good” for all humanity!

This year the service will be different than in past years. The Gospels report Jesus speaking seven times from the cross. Come to hear seven last words of Christ as we seek to dwell with him in that moment that is both painful and profoundly good.

Nursery will be provided. If you can’t make it, we’ll also have live video on our website at fumhutch.org/video. The recording will also be on there shortly after. (For that matter, if you had to miss last week’s Passion Service, you can still participate using that same link!)

Then: Easter Sunday!

It’s almost Easter! But what does that mean? Why do we celebrate it?

Easter is when we celebrate Christ’s victory over death. Sure, we can talk about heaven when you die, but it’s about way more than just that. It shows God’s power over all the troubles of this world and how God is working to make this world whole again. And the best part is that God wants to give us a gift– he wants us to help, like Michelangelo handing you a paintbrush only even bigger!

Even better still, living as one of God’s “Easter People” changes how you view everything. Join us this Sunday as we tell the story. Pastor Jeff will explain what a big difference it makes to live knowing “He is risen!”

(Oh yeah, and we’ll have an Easter Egg hunt for the kids after second service!)

Easter Flowers

This year, instead of ordering Easter Lilies, we invite you to bring your choice of an Easter plant or flower on Easter Sunday, April 1st,  for the front of the sanctuary. Pastor Jeff will say a blessing over the arrangements and after the service you can take them to your loved ones place of rest or give it to someone you care about.

Wonderful Wednesday/Third Service

It’s time for another session of Wonderful Wednesday/Third Service starting April 4th at 6pm in Friendship Place. We will meet each Wednesday in April with a covered dish meal and a different speaker each week. This week’s speaker is Anna Borders! Come with a friend and enjoy the food, fun, fellowship & faith!

Fair Priced Clothing Store

It’s time once again for First United Methodist Church to be in charge of the Fair Priced Clothing Store, but before we start running the store the seasonal change over needs to take place.  Even though the board of the Fair Priced Clothing Store is in charge of the change over, they are very willing to take all of the help they can get.  If you’d like to help with the seasonal change over, they will meet at the store at 9am on Monday, April 2nd and again on Tuesday, April 3rd. First Church will be in charge of running the store on Wednesdays & Fridays from 9am to 3pm and on Saturdays from 9am to Noon the whole month of April.  If you’d like to help out, please just show up during those times, even if it’s only for an hour! We appreciate all the help we can get!

Other Blessings
  • Pantry Needs: Spaghetti sauce, canned tuna (with pull tab to open), breakfast bars, fruit snack packs, canned fruit, canned vegetables, crackers, peanut butter, pancake mix & syrup.
  • Don’t forget to support our Hope Houses, the colorful boxes on the west side of our building! Bring anything to leave for anyone to take.
  • Have you linked your Dillons Plus card with the church? If you do, a portion of all your normal purchases will go to support our ministries! You can set it up by clicking here or contact the office if you’d like help.

Who will you invite for Easter? It’s a great opportunity to bring a friend!
